Our Loss
Information about the specifics of the attrition program can be found in a special article from Terry and myself below. The personal information as to the loss that we will be seeing here is another story.
Experience and the expertise retiring in this round of buyouts is mind boggling. Hundreds of years of experience are tough to replace. On a brighter note, the retirements have opened up opportunities for some of our laid-off members. It will be quite a transition period. To all of those leaving, I wish you a long and happy retirement.
Spring Union Hall Cleanup
Over the past few weeks a major undertaking at the Union Hall has been taking place. Deep cleaning, scrubbing and waxing of floors and window washing are just some of the undertakings. These jobs are being accomplished with the help of volunteer retirees and active workers. Many hours a day and many days a week have been spent with cleaners and towels in their hands. The Hall has not looked this good in as long as I can remember. I want to give those people a big thanks from all of us.
Annual Golf Outing
With all of the economic issues currently taking place, we put a great deal of thought as to whether or not we should hold our annual golf outing. It was decided that with the community and charities needing so much help it was probably more important than in other years to continue on with the event. A couple of major changes have taken place in the outing. First and foremost is the designated charities. Whereas in the past we have donated all proceeds to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, it was decided that even though it was a great charity, the need for food and other basic necessities were of more significance this year. Therefore, we have designated the Eastern Michigan Food Bank and the Salvation Army as the recipients of this year’s fundraiser. The Food Bank has a buying power that will multiply our donation by as much as 14 times for food and the Salvation Army has a grant for matching funds for new money that they receive. We have enjoyed working with the Make-A-Wish people and maybe in the future will be able to renew that relationship as the economy improves.
The date and time of the outing is August 1st at Brookwood Golf and Country Club. The venue change was to help the local economy. We will also be holding a dinner and fun day at the Union Hall immediately after the outing. For people who do not golf, they will be able to attend the afternoon event with dinner and other activities for $15.00. Activities for the dinner program are still in the planning stages.
Digital Camera Classes
The training classes have started at the Union Hall. Many of our active and retired members are utilizing the funding to take these classes. There is still time to sign up for the digital camera class. Contact Ron Winters at 238-1616, ext. 30, or Krista from GradePoint at 1-800-337-1157. Camera classes start April 20th and are covered by the 2009 UAW-TAP Benefit.
