With friends like these…
We worked hard to get a Democratic majority in the U.S. House and Senate, hoping to enact a progressive agenda. This agenda includes universal health care to help all Americans. Now that we have the chance to pass health care reform, a group is getting ready to stand in our way. This group isn’t the Republicans. It’s a group of Democrats calling themselves “Conservadems,” led by Democratic Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana. He is teaming up with a group of about 14 other Democrats to either water down or kill Obama’s budget. Obama’s budget contains the three priorities the President says we need for a healthy economy in the future. These are health care, switching our reliance on foreign oil to producing our own green energy, and education reform. The plan will be expensive and Obama’s team will go line-by-line through the budget process to eliminate waste. Suddenly the Conservadems are saying Obama’s budget is too big and spends too much money. While they are howling about the deficit, the economy is collapsing. The only thing lifting this economy is deficit spending by the federal government. The federal government must loosen its belt, not tighten it. Bayh clearly doesn’t get it.
The Conservadems claim to be high minded advocates of “fiscal responsibility.” But this is a cover – these Democrats are getting paid by special interests to stand in the way of changes. Here are some examples:
Evan Bayh stood in the way of the plan to have bankruptcy judges step in to re-do people’s mortgages, which would have prevented about 20 percent of foreclosures. This plan would not have cost the taxpayers any money, but Bayh opposed it. Incidentally, over the years he took millions from banks and investment houses for his campaigns. Ben Nelson, a Conservadem from Nebraska, objects to the Obama budget because it calls for moving to direct lending for student loans. It would eliminate the middlemen who collect subsidies, saving billions. The loans are guaranteed by the government, so there is no benefit to us to pay middlemen. But the middlemen are contributing to Ben Nelson’s campaign. Kent Conrad, a Conservadem from North Dakota, argues that the deficits are too high. That didn’t stop him from opposing Obama’s plan to save billions by paring the wasteful subsidies that go to agribusiness. Agribusiness firms are the leading contributors to Conrad’s campaign coffers.
These people could be standing in the way of universal health care for everyone in the United States, all so they can protect their little empires. Please feel free to contact these Conservadems to tell them to support Obama’s agenda, which includes universal health care:
